The opening sequence should have been an indicator. A mysterious envelope with black sand in it, the calling card of the dreaded Ozunu clan of assassins, arrives at a gang's hideout. All the silly thugs laugh their guts out even as the old, wise man is telling them of horrid things that are about to happen to them. Shadowy assailants summarily slice and dice everyone in a variety of creative ways.

Cut to Berlin and comely Europol agent Mika Coretti following a money trail that is linked to high profile assassinations. Are these assailants the ninjas of old? Her boss, Ryan Maslow tells her to leave things be. Mika, being a good Hollywood heroine, goes ahead anyway and finds out all about the Ozunu and because of her investigations, is being hunted down. Raizo is the deadliest of the assassins in the Ozunu.

The movie inter-cuts between the present and Raizo's past, telling the story of how he is picked up off the street and trained to become the perfect killing machine. After his friend (there is a bit of Bollywood-style dosti and pyaar here) is evilly done in, he turns rogue and decides to help Mika escape the Ozunu led by the sneering Takeshi. The movie is beyond violent with none of the fun of a Tarantino splatter-fest. This is just mean-spirited meditations on how much punishment a human body can take. The plot is nothing to write home about what with everyone running hither and thither trying to avoid gaping plot-holes.

As far as the acting goes, Korean pop star, Rain, makes his big Hollywood debut. He was the second lead in Speed Racer, where he did not have to do much apart from glower at the camera. In Ninja Assassin, while he has worked very hard on his body, it would have been nice if he had worked as hard on his emotions — he takes the inscrutable oriental mask to a whole new level. Naomie Harris proves that without the outrageous accent and over-the-top make-up of Calypso ( Pirates of the Caribbean), she would be lost in the woodwork. Rick Yune who we last saw covered in diamonds in Die Another Day, scowls his way through Takeshi. Directed by James McTeigue ( V For Vendetta) and produced by the Wachowski Brothers ( The Matrix trilogy) and Joel Silver, Ninja Assassin has nothing to recommend it. For a ninja-themed film, the action is pretty tepid and given the murky frames quite difficult to make sense of. Go for it only if senseless violence and children in terrible distress is your cup of tea.
